Working with Interpreters in Health Care
This workshop will cover the guidelines for providers on how to work effectively with a trained interpreter and also with an untrained interpreter. Health care interpreters and providers have to work together to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers to high-quality care. Not only must the provider rely on a third party to convey information, thoughts, and opinions, but also need to understand how ethnic and cultural factors often come into play that can further complicate communication. A skilled professional interpreter can help overcome these problems and quickly establish rapport with patients, bridging the language gap and providing valuable insight into a client’s culture, background, and beliefs.
